What we believe
Three principles guide every calculator and article on this site. They are simple, and most calculator sites violate at least two of them.
First: show the math. Every formula on Calcumatrix is documented in plain English, with sources cited. If we use the IRS mileage rate, we link to the IRS. If we cite the Foreign Service Institute\'s 600-hour estimate for Spanish, we link to the State Department. You should never have to trust us — you should be able to verify us.
Second: no fake precision. Many calculators confidently report answers to the cent when their inputs depend on six unknowable assumptions. We show ranges, document our assumptions, and tell you when the math is honest versus when it is approximate. Real life is messier than a marketing calculator.
Third: pair every tool with a guide. A calculator without context is just buttons. Every Calcumatrix calculator is paired with a 1,200-1,800 word article that explains the methodology, the trade-offs, and the edge cases. The article is the point; the calculator is the tool.
Who we are
Calcumatrix is an independent, ad-supported publication. We are a small team of writers, analysts, and developers who have spent careers in finance, healthcare, education, and software. We do not have venture backing, we do not sell your data, and we do not take payment from any product or service we mention in our calculators or articles.
Our editorial team includes a former financial advisor (CFP), a registered dietitian (RD), a software engineer who has worked on three continents, and a freelance writer who has lived in five countries. When we publish a calculator about language learning, it is because one of us has actually learned a Category IV language. When we publish about retirement planning, it is because one of us has actually walked clients through retirement planning.
How we make money
Calcumatrix is supported by display advertising through Google AdSense. We chose AdSense over sponsorships or affiliate links because it is the most transparent model: advertisers bid for space, Google places the ads, and we have no editorial relationship with the advertisers. We never accept payment to recommend a product or service in our calculators or articles. If we mention a product, it is because we use it or because it is the standard in the field.
We do not have a paywall, we do not sell a premium tier, and we do not ask for your email. The site is free to use, free to read, and free to share. Ads let us keep it that way.
Our editorial process
Every calculator and article goes through the same process:
- Research. We start with primary sources — IRS publications, peer-reviewed studies, government datasets, official documentation. We do not start with other calculator sites.
- Build. The calculator is built in JavaScript and runs entirely in your browser. No data leaves your device.
- Document. We write a methodology section explaining every formula, every assumption, and every limitation.
- Review. A second team member reviews the calculator for accuracy and the article for clarity.
- Publish. We publish with a publication date and update the article when sources change or readers flag issues.
- Maintain. We review each calculator annually and update formulas, rates, and source links as needed.
What we do not do
We do not scrape content from other sites. We do not rewrite Wikipedia articles. We do not use AI to generate bulk content. Every word on this site was written by a human, edited by a human, and reviewed by a human. If we make a mistake, we fix it openly — you can see the update history on each article.
We also do not give personalized financial, medical, legal, or tax advice. Our calculators are educational tools, not professional advice. Always consult a qualified professional before making decisions based on these calculations.
Contact us
We answer every email ourselves, usually within two business days. If you find a bug, an outdated rate, or a methodology you disagree with, we want to hear from you. Email contact@bblog.icu or use our contact page.
If you are a journalist, researcher, or educator who would like to cite or republish our work, please reach out — we are generous with permissions for non-commercial use.
